Let’s Dive into the Beast Tank Power Play in this Deep Dive Video on the Beast Offense’s most unstoppable youth football play. This video is from June 2020.
Hey Coaches!
Coach Parker here from CoachParker.org and BeastOffense.com — hope you’re doing great today. I’ve been getting a ton of questions about the Power Wing Beast Offense lately, especially since I’ve been putting out so much content on defense while wrapping up my 62 Multi 8 Youth Defense book. So today, we’re diving deep into one of my all-time favorite offensive plays: the Beast Left Tank.
Deep Dive Into the Beast Left Tank Power Play
This one Beast play has been a touchdown and first-down machine for me since 1994. It’s the cornerstone of the Power Wing Beast Offense — and it has defined my coaching identity. Let’s break The Beast Tank Play down and talk about how to run it, adjust it, and even let your players make smart audibles right on the field.
What Is the Beast Left Tank?
The Beast Left Tank play is a power run play designed to hit hard between or just outside your two big tackles — hence the name TANK (T for Tackles). You can run it under center or in shotgun. The blocking scheme is built to handle 90% of what most youth defenses throw at you.
The Base Beast Blocking Scheme:
Front Side: Severe angle down blocks
Back Side: Hinge or down blocks (what I call “jaw blocking”)
Backs: Flow in behind a trap-style wall for big yardage
When executed correctly, this play creates a strong wall on the front side, seals off pursuit, and lets your Beast Back pop through a crease toward the sideline — ideally only needing to beat one defender: the free safety.
When and Why to Run the Tank
If you’re running a new offense or just testing the waters with the Beast, this is the play to start with. It’s not just powerful — it’s adaptable.
Facing a basic 6-2? Run Tank.
They haven’t shifted to stop you? Run Tank.
Need to keep it simple for younger players? Run Tank.
I’ve even had 7-year-olds read this play pre-snap and make the right cut. With smart backs, especially ages 9 and up, you can teach them to pre-read defensive alignment and adjust on the fly.
The Read Lanes:
Coaching Smarts Into Your Beast Back
Once you install Tank, your Beast Back can learn to read 5-6 different lanes and audible based on how the defense aligns. Here’s how:
Primary Read (Tank Lane – “T”)
This is your go-to gap between the two tackles. Most defenses will eventually overstack it. That’s when you coach your back to check out of it.
Audible Lanes
I mark possible lanes 1 through 5. If the Tank lane is shut down, your back can:
Bounce outside on a sweep
Cut back through Goofy or Tricky gaps
Bootleg out or
Hit a quick backside counter
Your Beast Back becomes a field general. And yes — they can do it with just hand signals or code words from you.
Common Adjustments and Audible Calls
Here’s a sample of my audible calls and what they trigger:
Goofy / Tricky: Backside cut-through (guard or tackle gap)
So Long: Sweep left; avoid submarine-style Tank defense
Baton / Silly / Zany: Bootleg or backside sweep variations
Ricky Ricardo: Reverse play using 2-back
Crazy Heifer: Tight counter using backs 2, 3, 4 with trap
These adjustments work like an in-play RPO tree — but built for youth players. Once they understand the defense’s shape, they can attack with confidence.
Coaching Tips for Running the Beast Tank Like a Pro
Teach your back to read pre-snap — not post-snap.
Use hand signals or silly code words to make in-game checks fun and memorable.
Drill blocking consistency — front-side angle and back-side hinge are key.
Encourage your team to watch film. Show them how Tank walls off the defense.
Reinforce the sideline ladder. We want that back bursting outside and racing to daylight — not cutting back into traffic.
Try It, Adjust It, Win With It
The Beast Left Tank is more than just a play — it’s a play system. With smart players, especially seasoned juniors and seniors, you can unlock 5+ effective variations without changing formation or personnel.
This is what makes youth football FUN — and winning even funner.
