The Beast Counter plays are a must in the Beast Offense since a few more experienced / competent youth football defensive coaches will shift to the strong heavy side of the unbalanced offense. When these better teams do this you need a counter to your power. And the following 2 Beast Offense counter plays have worked great over the last 10 plus years. And of course there is always the traditional naked boot play and Crazy Heifer counter which I will not draw up here but are in my Power Wing Beast Offense playbook for youth football. And of course I consider the PWBO best youth football playbook for your team.

Beast Counter Play Texas Cactus

Below is a very simple Beast Offense Counter play that I call Texas or Texas Cactus. About a decade ago now, one of my competitors was running this counter against us very well, and I borrowed it from them the following week. Thanks to Coach Bell and his team the 2014 KYA 12u Texans.

At the time, I was running more traditional naked boots and some power boots, but in this Texas Cactus counter I like how the Beast Back will fake the Beast Power Play Tank and then counter step and get in behind the blockers.

I will run this play mainly out of shotgun and both Even and Unbalanced or BIG offensive line alignments. Cheating over to Even a few times a game is not picked up much and very sneaky. And even sneakier if your Unbalanced line flips to the counter side of the football. We would call Beast Right Big Left Texas Cactus to make the oline flip.

Beast TX Counter Play Player Responsibilities

• Beast Back – Fakes Beast Power Tank or Sweep Play – then counters steps and runs tough behind the two Beast blocking backs, cutting off their blocks
• 4 Back – Blocks backdoor edge rusher or first bad guy
• 3 Back – Blocks backdoor turns up into hole for first bad guy
• 2 Back – Blocks edge rusher
• Y – Split Blocks at hole or Down Block / JAW
• PT – Down Block / JAW
• T – Down Block / JAW
• PG – Down Block / JAW
• C – Down Block / JAW
• G – Down Block / JAW
• X – Down Block / JAW

Beast Offense Counter Play – Corky

The Beast Offense Counter play Corky has been in my Offense for over 2 decades. We ran it back in 2006 with my Arvada Pirates 8U football team north of Denver & bordering Golden, Colorado. Derek my FB at the time ran it very well. Although Corky is very simple FB counter play, it is not an easy play to be successful at, but it does keep the Defense honest. Here it is below…

Beast Corky Play Player Responsibilities

• Beast Back – Fakes Beast Power Tank or Sweep Play – Handoff inside to 4FB
• 4 Back – Hesitates half second so Beast Back can receive snap, then stays close to the line stepping toward BB, receives Handoff running counter behind weakside guard underneath the DE / OLB. Must run tough and merge into the scrum for the break out. Do not get one armed tackled.
• 3 Back – Blocks Big side LB
• 2 Back – Blocks Big side edge rusher
• Y – Down Block / JAW
• PT – Down Block / JAW
• T – Down Block / JAW
• PG – Down Block / JAW
• C – Down Block / JAW
• G – Down Block / JAW
• X – Down Block / JAW

You can also Wedge block this play and turn it into a FB Wedge. I would probably go to an Even alignment for that play but Wedge blocking also works. You can also get crazier and flip the o-line with the Big Unbalanced side on the Counter side of the football. This will give you a little more blocking help. And many times not picked up by the opposing coaches, especially if you run it toward your sidelines.
